Stand Up Paddle SUP

Stand up paddle surfing, or SUP, is a variant of surfing where the surfer uses a paddle to move through the water while standing on a surfboard. This discipline is fairly new in Christchurch but is a rapidly growing sport globally. The Stand Up Paddle race option adds a new dimension to the Surf n Turf series with competitors racing over approximately 4.km.

Course Descriptions

Corsair Bay
Click to enlarge The Paddle Course at Corsair Bay will start on the waters edge with all Paddle boards going together in one mass start along with the multisport Aquthon. They will head out to the left hand side of Corsair Bay beyond all the moored yachts to a buoy where paddlers will make a right hand turn and paddle south across Corsair Bay and Cass Bay to another buoy which will be located approximately 200m offshore, from there paddlers will make a right turn and follow the shoreline into Cass Bay around another buoy before heading back out of Cass Bay towards Corsair Bay. At this point paddlers will follow the shoreline around to the beach at Corsair Bay where they will pull their board up onto the beach then will run approximately 100m to the finish line.

Categories

Stand Up Paddle (SUP)

The SUP events will have 4 categories, these will be Junior (U20), Open (20-39), Master (40+) & 12:6″ each of these categories will also have a male and female option. If race demand is good then we may increase the number of categories into smaller age brackets.

Prizes

There will be a brief spot prize giving following each weeks race. Major spot prizes will be given out at the final prize giving, to be eligible for the major spot prizes competitors must compete in at least 5 of the 8 events.

Points will be allocated for both overall series champions and category champions. At this stage we are unsure if we will be able to award performance prizes for every race option.
